I&nbsp;am a&nbsp;certified expert in cycle health and natural family planning (NFP) and the founder of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovulista.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ovulista<\/a>. When I\u2019m not working for Ovulista, I&nbsp;like to go running, dancing, walking with friends, or to a&nbsp;caf\u00e9 or restaurant.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Ovulista and how did you come up with the&nbsp;idea?<\/h2>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovulista.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ovulista<\/a>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;company with the aim of providing scientific cycle knowledge and showing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/why-are-we-using-the-term-menstruating-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">menstruators<\/a>&nbsp;how they can use their cycle for their benefit \u2013 for their health, for contraception, or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/unfulfilled-wish-for-a-child-how-can-i-help-my-loved-ones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a&nbsp;wish for a&nbsp;child<\/a>. I&nbsp;stopped taking the pill a&nbsp;good five years ago and subsequently experienced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/hypothalamic-amenorrhoea-what-is-it-and-what-can-i-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a&nbsp;long period without menstruation<\/a>. During this phase, I&nbsp;studied the cycle and learned a&nbsp;lot that I&nbsp;didn\u2019t know \u2013 although I&nbsp;always felt well informed!<\/p>\n\n<p>I started with Ovulista because I&nbsp;wanted to share my knowledge, although initially it was just a&nbsp;hobby. In the meantime, I&nbsp;have undergone various training and further education in the field of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/category\/cycle-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cycle health<\/a>&nbsp;and NFP. Through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ovulista\/?hl=de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ovulista<\/a>, I&nbsp;would like to achieve that NFP and cycle health are also taken more seriously in medicine in the long term. Hormone-free contraceptive methods are, for example, barrier methods such as condoms and diaphragms, copper solutions, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/natural-family-planning-contraception-without-hormones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">methods of natural family planning (NFP)<\/a>. When I&nbsp;talk about NFP however, I&nbsp;always mean the safest NFP method, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/the-symptothermal-method-explained-tips-advantages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">symptothermal method<\/a>. In this method, two bodily signs, cervical mucus or cervix and, basal body temperature are observed and evaluated independently. This double-check makes this NFP method as safe as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/birth-control-and-your-period-facts-and-explanations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the pill or hormonal contraception<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cervical mucus \u2013 What is it and what types are&nbsp;there?<\/h3><p>Cervical mucus is what most people know as \u201cdischarge\u201d. It is a&nbsp;secretion produced at the cervix (neck of the womb). Cervical mucus plays a&nbsp;very important role in health and fertility. Depending on which phase of your cycle you are in, it is either part of your immune system or life insurance for sperm on their way to the&nbsp;egg.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-1024x727.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-1024x727.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-416x295.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-768x545.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle-1536x1091.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2201_Ovulista_Grafik_Zervixschle.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><p>On the non-fertile days of the cycle, cervical mucus is thick, sticky and, like a&nbsp;plug that seals the cervix. On fertile days it becomes more fluid and often more visible, then it supports sperm on their way into the uterus.<\/p><p>By observing cervical mucus, you can therefore easily see what is happening hormonally in your&nbsp;body.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the advantages of hormone-free contraception?<\/h2><p>The most significant advantage of non-hormonal contraception is that the natural hormonal balance remains unaffected. Hormones are sent through the body via the bloodstream and therefore never act only locally \u2013 even if this is often claimed. The hormone balance thus not only influences the menstrual cycle, but also the choice of partner,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/what-influence-do-the-phases-of-the-menstrual-cycle-have-on-your-mood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mood<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/to-desire-and-sex-in-the-relationship-with-oh-my-fantasy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">libido<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/everything-in-balance-nutrition-for-the-menstrual-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appetite<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/yoga-exercises-for-the-different-phases-of-the-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy level<\/a>, and much&nbsp;more.<\/p><p>If the natural hormone balance is manipulated with hormonal contraception, this influences all areas of life.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/birth-control-and-your-period-facts-and-explanations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The pill<\/a>&nbsp;is also a&nbsp;medical drug and comes with a&nbsp;correspondingly long list of side effects. When hormone-free contraception is used with NFP, these side effects do not occur. Other advantages of contraception with NFP are: improved body knowledge and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/cycle-awareness-in-harmony-with-ones-own-body\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">body awareness<\/a>, and the possibility to integrate the cycle into life and use it for oneself.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is non-hormonal contraception best&nbsp;for?<\/h3><p>Non-hormonal contraception is suitable for anyone who is not comfortable with hormonal contraception \u2013 be it because of the side effects, because they are vegan or because they want to have a&nbsp;natural&nbsp;cycle.<\/p><p>There is a&nbsp;prejudice against NFP that the method is only suitable for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/menstruation-around-the-world-periods-as-a-transman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">menstruating people<\/a>&nbsp;who have a&nbsp;regular cycle and lifestyle. But this is not true. Because NFP involves daily monitoring of body signs,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/unspoken-realities-of-the-journey-through-fertility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fertility<\/a>&nbsp;is always assessed based on of the current cycle and not based on past cycles. NFP is therefore also suitable for irregular cycles.<strong><\/strong><\/p><p>With NFP you don\u2019t have to change or adapt your lifestyle. Everything is allowed, you just have to know how to deal with some things in the evaluation. I&nbsp;recommend learning NFP, even if you don\u2019t want to use it for contraception (for now). NFP helps you find out what\u2019s going on hormonally in your body, if you\u2019re ovulating and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/when-nothing-flows-menstrual-cycle-irregularity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">if your cycle is healthy<\/a>. It also helps you to understand yourself better because the hormones in your cycle also affect your mood, thoughts, needs, energy, and much&nbsp;more.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n<p>You can find tips and more information about this in my German&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ovulista.de\/extras\/starter-guides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stop Taking the Pill Guide<\/a>, available for download for&nbsp;0\u20ac.<\/p><\/div><\/div><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I&nbsp;learn Natural Family Planning\/NFP (with&nbsp;you)?<\/h3><p>I currently offer a&nbsp;German online course program about NFP for contraception as well as one-to-one consultations, for people who have previously learned NFP on their own and now have questions or challenges in using it. Individual counseling is also already available for menstruating people and couples who want to use NFP if they wish to have children. An online course for those wishing to have children is still being planned.<\/p><p>The online course program about NFP for contraception is called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovulista.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naturally Safe<\/a>\u201d and is suitable for everyone who wants to use NFP for birth control safely. The program consists of about four hours of video material explaining the method and how to use it, group coaching sessions to discuss individual questions about your observations and cycle recordings, a&nbsp;digital course book with practice exercises, and a&nbsp;support group for sharing and asking questions.<\/p><p>More about the online course program and the individual consultations can be found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovulista.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on my website<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does a&nbsp;cycle sheet work? What do I&nbsp;have to&nbsp;enter?<\/h3><p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensiplan.de\/storage\/media\/documents\/22\/sensiplan-cyclesheet-englisch.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cycle sheet<\/a>&nbsp;is for recording your daily observations (cervical mucus\/cervix\/basal body temperature).<\/p><p>You start a&nbsp;new cycle sheet when your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/menstruation-101-the-most-important-period-facts-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">period<\/a>&nbsp;starts. During the days of menstruation, you record the amount of bleeding and any symptoms that occur. You also record your measurement time, your rounded basal body temperature, and any disturbing factors or peculiarities that may have affected your temperature. At the end of your period, record what you observed about your cervical mucus: Appearance and sensation\/feeling. Then you choose the appropriate category for your cervical mucus observation.<\/p><p>You can think of it as drawing a&nbsp;new picture every cycle and then using that picture you can evaluate your cycle health and fertile phase. There are analog cycle sheets, where you write down your observations by hand with a&nbsp;pen and do the evaluations yourself, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulvani.com\/en\/the-symptothermal-method-explained-tips-advantages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital cycle sheets in the form of apps<\/a>.<\/p><p>I recommend starting with an analog sheet in the learning phase of the method so that you are sure you have understood everything correctly. After that, you can also switch to an app to help you with the evaluation. It is important for a&nbsp;correct evaluation (whether with or without an app) that you know what you are&nbsp;doing.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get to know your cycle and your body better through non-hormonal contraception!<\/h3><p>First, I&nbsp;would like to thank you for the interview. I&nbsp;am always very happy when I&nbsp;can talk about my cycle, menstruation, and NFP. I&nbsp;think many more menstruators should get to know their cycle and their body better! That\u2019s why I&nbsp;find Vulvani\u2019s work so valuable. Then I&nbsp;would like to say two things in conclusion:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>NFP is more than \u201cjust\u201d a&nbsp;safe, non-hormonal contraceptive method.<\/li>\n\n<li>And it\u2019s okay to be skeptical at first about whether body monitoring works. It\u2019s perfectly fine to use NFP \u201conly\u201d for cycle monitoring at first.
